They have a rotor that rotates with the movement of the wearer's arm, thus winding the mainspring of the watch. This in turn powers the watch's movement and keeps accurate time.
Automatic watches have a balance wheel oscillator that determines the speed or frequency of the watch. The balance wheel swings back and forth, and the frequency of its movement determines the seconds, minutes and hours of the watch. If the balance wheel is not adjusted properly, the watch may lose or gain seconds over time, resulting in inaccurate timekeeping.
